Device Compatibility Checks Are Now Automatic: See Whether Your Phone Is Likely Supported the Moment the Page Loads

Wondering "will eSIM even work on my phone?" before you buy? You no longer need to type in your device model — an instant compatibility estimate now appears the moment you open the page. Open Bloomy's pre-purchase check page on your smartphone, tap "Check if this device is compatible," and we'll automatically show an estimate based on the device you're holding. That's one less step to take care of, and one less small worry before checkout. In this article, we'll cover what changed in this update, how the check makes its call, and the single most reliable way to confirm compatibility before you buy.

What you'll learn in this article
  • The device check now runs automatically when the page opens
  • Results are based on your OS version and device model information
  • When we're not sure, we say "please verify" rather than guessing
  • The most reliable check is in your device's own settings
  • Searching by model name still works exactly as before

What's new in this update

Here's the short version: when you open the page on a smartphone, a compatibility estimate for the device you're using appears automatically — before you search for anything. Previously, the device check worked by searching for your model name. With this update, it's a two-step approach: automatic detection first, with search available whenever you need it.

  • On iPhone: we base the estimate on your OS version. iPhones that run a recent OS belong to generations that support eSIM, so we can tell you right away that your device is very likely compatible. For devices on older OS versions, we don't guess — we show "please verify" along with steps to check in your settings.
  • On Android: we match your device's model information against our compatibility list. If we can't identify the model, we never assume it's supported — we show "please verify" and err on the side of caution.
  • The search box works as before: if you're choosing an eSIM for a different device — a family member's phone, or a gift for someone about to travel — you can still look it up by model name, just like before. We've added a note near the automatic result to make this clear.
  • On desktop computers, we skip automatic detection and offer search only. The device you're browsing on is likely not the device you'll use the eSIM with, so we avoid showing a potentially misleading result.

Here's how it behaves depending on where you open the page:

Where you open itAutomatic checkWhat the estimate is based onNotes
iPhone (smartphone)YesOS version informationDevices on older OS versions get "please verify" plus verification steps
Android (smartphone)YesModel information matched against our compatibility listShows "please verify" if the model can't be identified
Desktop computerNo (search only)No automatic check, since it's likely not the device you'll actually use

Why we made this change

Typing a device model accurately is harder than it sounds. Similar names like "iPhone 14 Pro" and "iPhone 14," cryptic Android model numbers, easy-to-make typos — that one extra step right before purchase often left people wondering, "did I get that right?"

And in the days before a trip, there's already plenty to do: flights, accommodation, packing. Sorting out mobile data tends to get pushed to the last minute. Rather than adding a "look it up" step at exactly the moment you want fewer decisions, we redesigned the check to give you the answer up front. When an estimate appears the moment the page opens, that's time you can spend comparing plans instead.

The most reliable check: your device's own settings

Key point

The automatic result is an estimate, not a guarantee. Before you buy, checking eSIM support directly in your device's settings is the most reliable way to be sure — and it takes well under a minute.

Here's how to check:

DeviceHow to checkWhat you'll see if eSIM is supported
iPhoneOpen Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Service)An option such as "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan" appears
AndroidOpen Settings → Network & internet → SIMsAn option such as "Add SIM" or "Download eSIM" appears (wording varies by manufacturer)

The other thing to check is whether your device is carrier-locked. A phone bought through a mobile carrier may not work with a travel eSIM unless it has been unlocked. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About and look at "Carrier Lock" — if it says "No SIM restrictions," you're all set. Even if the checker says your device is compatible, verifying these two points before departure gives you extra peace of mind. You'll find more detail on our eSIM-compatible devices page.

Good to know: general rules of thumb for eSIM support

Part of the reason we built this update is that eSIM compatibility is genuinely confusing. As a general pattern, eSIM support on iPhone spread from relatively recent generations onward, so a device that runs a recent OS is very likely to support it. That's exactly the relationship our automatic check relies on when it uses OS information for iPhones.

Android is a different story: support varies by manufacturer, by model, by the country or region it was sold in, and by whether it's a carrier-specific variant. Two devices with the same series name can differ on eSIM support depending on the exact model — which is why judging by name alone is risky. That's also why Bloomy never displays "compatible" as a guess: when we can't identify the model, we show "please verify" and point you to the settings check instead. One more thing to keep in mind: second-hand devices, or phones from a previous carrier plan, may still be carrier-locked.

What this means for you

Say your departure date is coming up and you want to grab an eSIM quickly from your phone: now you simply open the check page, see the compatibility estimate right away, and continue straight to purchase. If you see "please verify" instead, the settings steps are shown right there — so you always know what to do next.

And when you're setting up eSIMs for the whole family, or picking one as a gift for someone heading abroad, the search box still lets you check by model name as before. Once you've confirmed the device is compatible, head to the eSIM comparison page to find a plan by destination, data amount, and trip length.

Other things worth checking before you buy

Alongside device compatibility, checking these points now will save you questions later.

  • Carrier lock status: as mentioned above, if you bought your phone through a carrier, confirm it's unlocked before your trip.
  • Bloomy eSIMs are data-only: they come without a phone number, so voice calls and SMS over the cellular network aren't available. App-based calling over data — WhatsApp, Messenger, FaceTime, and similar — works as usual. If you need to receive SMS verification codes or make regular calls, keep your existing number active on your primary plan, or consider a VoIP (app-based phone number) service. Also note that plans are subject to a fair usage policy, and actual speeds vary depending on the local network, your device, and coverage in the area you're visiting.
  • The setup flow: after purchase, you tap the setup link we send you, follow the on-screen steps to add the eSIM, and switch the line on once you arrive at your destination. See the eSIM setup guide for the full walkthrough, and the troubleshooting page if you ever have trouble connecting.

The details we cared about most

The principle we held onto throughout this update: when we're not sure, we don't say "compatible." Any device with even a little uncertainty gets flagged as "please verify," always paired with a reliable way to check for yourself. Automatic detection is convenient — but convenience means nothing if you land at your destination and can't get online. We chose not to trade accuracy for convenience.

We also reworked the wording of the results themselves. Rather than a blunt "works / doesn't work" verdict, the language is carefully chosen to make clear that the result is an estimate.

What's next

We'll keep updating the device information behind the check as new models are released, and we plan to keep refining both the accuracy of the results and the clarity of the guidance based on how people actually use it.
