For study abroad and working holiday in Canada, it helps to split things by situation: "a data-only eSIM to get connected before you arrive" and "a local plan with a phone number for the times you need a Canadian number." This article goes through which one suits each situation: your arrival day, looking for a place to live, official procedures, length of stay, and temporary trips back to Japan. The details about Ketaiya (けーたい屋), Giraffe Mobile and PhoneBox come from each company's official pages, which we opened and checked on November 3, 2026.
Bloomy eSIM is the service run by us, the writers of this article. BLOOM ABROAD, a study abroad information site, is run by the same company. Ketaiya, Giraffe Mobile and PhoneBox are services listed on BLOOM ABROAD, and we may receive a referral fee when you sign up through a BLOOM ABROAD link. Data-only eSIM vs a plan with a phone number
The biggest difference is whether you have a Canadian phone number. A data-only eSIM works for data use such as maps, LINE and email, and it does not include calls or SMS on a phone number. A plan with a phone number lets you make calls and send text messages with a Canadian number, and it includes data as well.
| Data-only eSIM (Bloomy eSIM) | Local plan with a phone number | |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian phone number | Not included | Included |
| Getting started | Buy and set it up in Japan; the validity period starts the first time it connects in Canada | You choose the activation date when you apply (the activation time and method differ by company) |
| How you pay | A one-time purchase for the number of days you use | Monthly payments (there are prepaid and monthly plans) |
| Suited period | Bridging the first days after arrival, or a short stay | The period you live in Canada |
How to choose for each situation
Arrival day (the first few days from the airport)
If you only need a map from the airport to your accommodation and a way to contact your family, either option can be connected from the day you arrive. With Bloomy eSIM you can finish the setup in Japan. Plans with a phone number can also be applied for while you are still in Japan, and Ketaiya advises setting the activation date to the day before your entry date. Giraffe Mobile says it delivers the eSIM by email as soon as the same day at the earliest. PhoneBox says you can choose your activation date.
Looking for housing or a job
If you will talk with landlords or employers by phone or text message, a plan with a Canadian phone number is a good fit. With a data-only eSIM you can make calls through apps such as LINE, but you cannot use calls or SMS with a Canadian number. If you think you will need a number, get a plan with a phone number ready around the time you arrive.
Procedures such as a bank account or a SIN
So that you can answer right away when you are asked for a contact phone number during a procedure, it is reassuring to have a plan with a phone number activated before you start. To find out what each procedure requires, check the official guidance of each office.
Short stay (under 6 months)
For a language course of a few weeks, a data-only eSIM is often enough. If you want a phone number too, choose a plan you can sign up for with just your passport. Giraffe Mobile describes its Freedom Mobile plan as "available with a passport only" and recommends it for stays under 6 months and for people on a tourist visa (eTA). At Ketaiya, Bell and Virgin Plus contracts require use for 6 months or more, and it also offers prepaid Lucky Mobile.
Long stay (6 months or more)
If you will live there for 6 months or more, a plan with a phone number becomes the main choice. Some plans have a large monthly data allowance, so one line can cover most of your daily life. You can also use Bloomy eSIM only for the few days between your arrival and the activation of that plan.
Temporary trips back to Japan
How your Canadian line is handled during a temporary trip home differs by company. For Lucky Mobile, Ketaiya says "even if you stop the monthly payments, your account is kept for 4 months." For data while you are in Japan, you can also use Bloomy eSIM's Japan plan (3GB for 15 days, ¥410). For people who want to keep their Japanese phone number, Giraffe Mobile offers SIMs and eSIMs that let you keep a Japanese number.

When Bloomy eSIM is a good fit and when it is not
Bloomy eSIM is an eSIM for data only. You cannot use calls or SMS with a Canadian phone number. A plan with a phone number is a better fit for people who use a phone number while looking for housing or a job, and for people who stay in Canada long and cannot do without a number.
Where Bloomy eSIM helps is as a connection you can use before you arrive. If you buy and set it up in Japan, the validity period starts the first time it connects in Canada. Bloomy eSIM's Canada plans are 3GB for 30 days at ¥890, 10GB for 30 days at ¥2,360 and 20GB for 30 days at ¥4,000 (as shown on November 3, 2026). Try it for data during the few days until a plan with a phone number is activated, or during a short language course.
Examples of combining them
- A language course of a few weeks: cover data with Bloomy eSIM alone
- A working holiday or study abroad of 6 months or more: apply for a plan with a phone number in Japan, and stay connected with Bloomy eSIM until it is activated
- Want to decide on a local plan after you arrive: spend the first few weeks on Bloomy eSIM, then choose a plan with a phone number once you have settled in
The overall flow of mobile service for a working holiday in Canada, including whether to keep your Japanese phone number and how to think about communication costs, is covered in "Canada Working Holiday Phone and Communication Cost Guide."
If you also want to look into cities, schools and costs in Canada, take a look at BLOOM ABROAD's "Study in Canada" page. You can choose a Bloomy eSIM Canada plan by data size and number of days on the comparison page.
