Albania eSIM Guide: Networks, Airport Activation & How Much Data You Need

Last updated: October 2, 2026

Albania is still under the radar for many travelers, so good information can be hard to find. Will your phone work there? Can you get online as soon as you land? How much data do you need? This guide covers what to check, in order, from before you leave until you arrive. The short answer: install your eSIM before you leave home, then switch it on when you land in Albania. That way you can usually get online right from the airport. To pick a data amount, think about how many days you'll stay and how you use your phone each day.

What you'll learn
  • Which networks and 5G coverage you can expect in Albania
  • What to check on your phone before you leave
  • How to activate your eSIM after you land
  • How much data to get for your trip length
  • What a data-only eSIM can and can't do

Does eSIM Work in Albania? Networks and 5G Coverage

Yes. You can browse Bloomy plans for Albania on our comparison page, and some of them support 5G (as of October 2026). Partner networks and 5G availability differ from plan to plan, so check the plan details before you buy.

Our internal data lists the following partner networks for plans that work in Albania:

Network typeNetwork names (internal data, as of October 2026)
5G3, A1, Bakcell, One Albania, Optus, Tele2, Telenor, Vivacom, Vodafone, Wind
4GBeeline, MTS, Movistar, Vodafone

This list covers Albania-only plans and also multi-country regional plans, so not every network on it operates in Albania. Some names, such as Vodafone, show up under both 4G and 5G because the network type depends on the plan. Inside Albania, most plans connect to networks like One Albania and Vodafone. You can see which network your plan uses in its details.

On a 5G-capable plan, you only get 5G when you're in a 5G coverage area and your phone supports 5G. Elsewhere you'll be on 4G. Unless you really need 5G, 4G is usually plenty for maps, social media and looking things up.

Before You Leave: Phone Compatibility, Bands and Carrier Lock

Check three things before your trip: your phone supports eSIM, it's carrier-unlocked, and it works with local networks. If any one of these fails, your eSIM may not connect when you arrive.

Is your phone eSIM-compatible?

Most recent iPhones and many Android phones support eSIM. Within the same model line, though, support can depend on the region where the phone was sold and the exact model number. Look up your phone in our list of eSIM-compatible devices.

Is your phone unlocked?

A phone bought through a mobile carrier may be locked to that carrier, and a locked phone may not accept an eSIM from another provider. Many newer phones come unlocked. If your phone is older or you're still paying it off, check your phone's settings or ask your carrier at home to be sure.

Network bands

"Bands" are the radio frequencies your phone can pick up. If your phone doesn't support the frequencies a local network uses, it may struggle to get a signal even with the eSIM installed. Major iPhone and Android models usually cover the 4G bands common around the world, but this varies by model. With 5G, the connection depends on whether your phone's 5G bands match the ones the local network uses.

To be certain, look at the spec page on your phone maker's official website, usually under "bands" or "cellular". Albanian networks can change the frequencies they use, so this article doesn't list specific band numbers.

Activating Your eSIM After Landing in Tirana

Install the eSIM before you leave home, and switch it on after you land in Albania. If you start the setup at the airport, you can lose time hunting for Wi-Fi and looking up the steps, which may hold up your pickup or onward travel.

Before you leave

  1. Choose and buy an Albania plan on the comparison page
  2. Tap the setup link you receive and follow the on-screen steps to install the eSIM
  3. Keep the new eSIM turned off until you arrive

Depending on the plan, your validity period may start when you install the eSIM or when it first connects to a local network. Check when the countdown starts before you buy. Our eSIM setup guide walks through the process with screenshots.

After you land

  1. Turn off airplane mode
  2. In your cellular/mobile data settings, turn on the Bloomy eSIM and select it as your line for mobile data
  3. Turn on "Data Roaming" for that eSIM
  4. Turn off mobile data on your home line so you don't run up roaming charges by accident
  5. When signal bars appear at the top of the screen, open a maps app or similar to check that you're connected

It can take a few minutes for the signal to show up. If you can't connect, try turning airplane mode on and off again, or restart your phone. If that doesn't fix it, go through our troubleshooting guide step by step.

Mobile Coverage in Albania: When Connectivity Can Be Tricky

Coverage is generally good in cities like Tirana. In mountain areas and on long drives, expect a weaker signal at times. Much of Albania is mountainous, so the signal can be patchy in the northern highlands and on some roads between towns.

  • Mountains and long journeys: Download offline maps before you set out so you can still follow your route when the signal drops.
  • Crossing into neighboring countries: Many travelers combine Albania with Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia or Greece. Albania isn't an EU member, so a Europe regional plan doesn't always include it. If you're visiting several countries, check that each plan covers every country on your route.
  • Wi-Fi at hotels and cafés: Wi-Fi is available in many places, but speed and reliability vary a lot. Using your eSIM as your main connection, with Wi-Fi as a backup, makes getting around much easier.
Good to know

Bloomy plans are data-only eSIMs: they don't include a phone number, SMS or regular calls. App-based calls over data, such as WhatsApp, Messenger and FaceTime, work as normal. The only things you can't do are make or receive regular phone calls and send or receive SMS. If a hotel or tour booking needs a phone number or SMS verification, plan another option ahead of time, like keeping your home-country number active or getting a plan that includes a number.

How Much Data Do You Need?

For maps, social media and browsing, plan on about 0.5–1GB per day. If you stream video or use hotspot/tethering often, plan on 2GB or more per day. These are rough figures. Automatic photo backups and how much video you watch can change your usage a lot.

*These estimates assume typical use as of October 2026. Plan details and prices depend on data amount and duration.

If you're unsure, pick a little more data than you think you need so you don't have to watch your balance late in the trip. For longer stays, or if you'll be working from a laptop, an unlimited eSIM such as Bloomy Unlimited Max is worth considering. Unlimited Max has no slowdown based on how much data you use. To keep usage fair, extreme usage may be limited. Other unlimited plans are still subject to a fair usage policy and may slow down after a certain amount of use, so read the terms before you buy.

How to Choose an eSIM for Albania

Once you know where you're going, how long you'll stay and how you'll use your phone each day, you've basically narrowed it down. Work through these steps in order:

  1. Confirm your destinations: If you're only visiting Albania, choose an Albania plan. If you're also visiting neighboring countries, choose a regional plan that covers all of them.
  2. Choose the duration: Pick a plan a little longer than your trip in case your flight home is delayed.
  3. Choose the data amount: Use the table above and pick the option closest to how you normally use your phone.
  4. Decide whether you need 5G: If you often send or download large files, go for a 5G plan. For maps and social media, 4G usually works fine.

Prices depend on data amount and duration, and the difference between options can be large. To see current prices and plan details, select the country, data amount and number of days on our eSIM comparison page. Check the final price when you buy.
