If you see “Cannot activate eSIM” after setting up an eSIM, it’s natural to worry that the installation failed. In many cases, though, the eSIM was already installed during the first attempt, and this message appears on a second try. An eSIM setup profile can only be installed once, so before doing anything else, don’t delete anything. Check the Cellular screen on your device to see whether the line is already there.
- A second-attempt message can mean the eSIM is already installed
- Start by checking the Cellular screen for the line
- If you find it, don’t delete or reconfigure it
- Plans for a specific destination shouldn’t be turned on at home
- If you can’t find it, contact us with details about what happened
What does “Cannot activate” actually mean?
This message appears when your device couldn’t receive the eSIM setup information correctly. However, it doesn’t always mean the eSIM isn’t installed. The main causes are three:
1. Setup information can only be installed once
The eSIM setup information (delivered via a setup link or QR code) can be installed only once on a given device. If the eSIM was already added to your device during the first attempt and you repeat the same step, the second attempt may show “Cannot activate.”
2. You tried to turn on a destination-only plan at home
Plans that work only in a specific country won’t connect if you try to turn them on at home. This can also trigger an activation-related message. It’s not a malfunction. The line will work once you turn it on in a supported country.
3. The setup was interrupted by an unstable connection
If your Wi-Fi or signal was unstable, or Airplane Mode was on, setup may stop partway through.
| Possible cause | What’s happening | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| A second attempt | The eSIM may have been added during the first attempt | Check the Cellular screen for the line |
| Destination-only plan turned on at home | It won’t connect outside the supported country | Keep it off and turn it on after you arrive |
| Unstable connection | Setup may have stopped partway | Check the status on a stable Wi-Fi connection |
Steps to check whether the eSIM is installed
Screen names vary by OS and device. The example below uses iPhone. On Android, look under Settings > Network & internet for the SIM section, or a similar menu.
- Restart your device once.
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- Look under the SIM or eSIM section for any line that has already been added.
- Check for unfamiliar line names, such as “Travel” or “Secondary.”
- If a line shows as Off, it may still be installed on your device.
Line names are often assigned automatically by the device and may not match your plan name. A line labeled as previously used as an eSIM may be the one you set up.
When contacting support, it helps to note your device’s EID (eSIM identifier number). On iPhone, you can find it under Settings > General > About, near the bottom of the screen.
What you should avoid
If you delete an installed line, you may not be able to reinstall it using the same setup information. Until you’ve confirmed the status, don’t delete or reconfigure anything.
- Deleting the line: In a rush, you could lose an eSIM that should still work.
- Repeating the same steps many times: This makes it harder to tell what happened.
- Scanning on a different device: If you move between the device where you first installed it and another one, it becomes unclear which device holds the eSIM.
What to do by situation
| Line status on your device | Likely state | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Installed line, Off | Installed | Don’t delete it. Turn it on at your destination |
| Installed line, On | Installed | Confirm the destination is supported and check Data Roaming |
| No line found | May not be installed | Organize your steps and contact support |
If you can’t find a line, we’ll need to review the situation before we can determine whether a reissue is possible. Please contact us through Contact Us with the following: how many times and in what order you performed the steps, any messages you saw, whether you deleted a line, and whether you used a different device. Screenshots of your screen are also helpful.
Once you arrive at your destination
If the eSIM is already installed, you can start using it with the following steps after arriving.
- Open Settings > Cellular, select the eSIM line you added, and turn it on.
- On the same screen, turn on Data Roaming.
- Go back to the Cellular screen and set Cellular Data to that eSIM.
If you can’t connect, check that your APN (access point name) matches the instructions for your plan. For details, see Troubleshooting Connection Issues.
Bloomy eSIMs are generally data-only. Messaging and calling apps that use data, such as WhatsApp and FaceTime, work as usual, but you can’t make or receive calls to phone numbers or send SMS. Coverage and speed depend on the local network, your device, and your location. Plans are also subject to a fair use policy.
When does the validity period start?
Depending on the plan, the validity period may start counting from the first time the eSIM connects to a network at your destination, not when it’s installed on your device. Some plans don’t reduce the period if you set them up before departure and don’t connect until you arrive. Check the purchase page to see which applies. If you’ve already purchased, you can check the status of your eSIM on My Account.
What works and what doesn’t
- Helpful: Finish setup before you leave and check the screen calmly
- Not helpful: Deleting a line out of worry, or scanning again and again
Tips for first-time users
If you finish setup a few days before departure, you’ll have time to sort things out if something goes wrong. It’s also worth reviewing eSIM-compatible devices and our setup guide, which walks through the steps. For more on eSIM basics, see our eSIM Guide.

Summary
Seeing “Cannot activate” doesn’t necessarily mean setup failed. Start by checking the Cellular screen on your device for an installed line. If you find one, don’t delete it. Keep it until you reach your destination. If you can’t find one, gather your steps and screenshots and contact us.
