A SIM lock restricts a phone to one carrier's network. To use an overseas eSIM, your device may need to be unlocked.

It's a restriction placed by the carrier so the phone only works on their network. With a lock, an overseas eSIM may not connect even after being added.
How to check your unlock status
Check in your device settings or via your carrier's account page/support. Many recently purchased phones are sold already unlocked.
How to get it unlocked
In many cases you can do it free from your carrier's account page. After unlocking, restart and try adding the eSIM.
