The remaining data on your active eSIM now updates automatically to reflect how you're actually using it. Just open My Account and you'll see where you stand right now — and it's easier to notice when you're running low.
What changed
The short version: the remaining data shown in My Account now includes what you've just used.
Until now, the "used" and "remaining" figures on an active eSIM didn't always keep pace with real usage. We also found cases where the remaining percentage didn't match the actual amount left.
With this update, your remaining data refreshes automatically, and the percentage reflects the real value. We've also brought already-purchased eSIMs in line with their current usage. There's nothing you need to do on your end for this to take effect.
To be clear, this was a display fix — no data allowance was ever reduced. The volume you purchased is still yours to use, exactly as before.
Why we prioritized it
Your remaining data is information you act on while you're traveling.
If you're running low, you skip the video, save maps ahead of time, or wait for hotel Wi-Fi to send photos. When the number is off, every one of those decisions is off too. Thinking you're still at half, streaming for an hour, then coming up short on tomorrow's transit day — that's a genuinely bad moment to be stranded.
Low-balance alerts are tied to the same figure. If the display isn't current, the notice may not reach you when you'd actually want it. What looked like a cosmetic issue was really about not noticing at the moment it matters, so we moved it up the list.
What's better for you
Checking "how much do I have left?" after purchase is now much more straightforward.
- The remaining data in My Account matches your real usage
- It refreshes automatically — no action needed to check
- The display is clearer when you're down to a small amount
- You're less likely to miss the point where you're nearly out
You can check your active eSIM anytime from My Account — including while you're abroad, as long as you have a connection. Logging in once before you leave, just to see where the balance appears, saves fumbling later. If you'd like to review the setup steps again, the setup guide is there too.
Worth knowing: how much data you need, and what to do if you're running short
Once you can see your balance, the next question is usually "how many GB do I actually need?" It depends heavily on how you use your phone, so the clearest approach is days × a daily estimate.
| Mainly how you use it | Rough daily use | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, search, messaging | A few hundred MB | A smaller plan is often enough |
| Also browsing social media, sharing photos | Around 1GB | Days × 1GB, with a little headroom |
| Lots of streaming or video calls | Several GB | Consider a large-volume or unlimited-type plan |
These are general estimates as of writing, not guarantees. Video quality settings, app updates, and photo backups all move the needle. Even at "1GB a day," a day spent moving between cities burns through data very differently from a day spent at your accommodation.
If you're running low, check your settings first
There's plenty you can do before buying more. These three changes alone slow consumption noticeably:
- Set app auto-updates to Wi-Fi only
- Lower video quality (turning off autoplay helps too)
- Pause automatic photo backup for now
It also helps to batch things — sharing photos, downloading maps — during hours when you have hotel or café Wi-Fi. Saving offline maps at home before you fly is the easiest win of all.
If that's still not enough
When you're close to using it up, you can either add data to your current eSIM or buy a new plan. Which one fits depends on how many days you have left and how much you expect to use.
| Your situation | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A few days left, and you only need a bit more | Add data to the eSIM you're using | No re-setup, less hassle |
| Your trip got longer, or you're using far more than expected | Pick a plan matched to your days and volume | Easier to keep track of and to keep in budget |
| Moving on to another country or region | Check a plan that covers your next destination | Coverage varies by plan |
Whether data can be added, and how much, depends on the plan. You can review what you currently have in My Account, and browse options by destination, data volume, and number of days on the comparison page. If you stream or make video calls often, the unlimited-type plans are worth a look. Note that even with unlimited plans, fair usage conditions, speeds after a certain volume, and whether tethering is allowed differ by plan — it's worth checking the terms before you buy. Connection speed and overall experience also vary with the local network, coverage area, and congestion.
App-based calls use data too
Bloomy eSIM is data-only. There's no phone number, so voice calls and SMS aren't available — but app-based calls that run over data, such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and FaceTime, work as usual. Video calls use considerably more data than voice-only, so if you're settling in for a long one, glance at your balance first. If you need a phone number or SMS for verification codes, plan for that separately — for example, by keeping your home-country line active while you travel.
What we cared about
The thing we cared most about here: you look, you know — and you don't have to do anything to make that true. No hunting for a refresh button, no logging out and back in just to see your balance.
When you're down to the last stretch, we made the display fine-grained. A few percent left and a few dozen percent left mean completely different things when you're on the road. Rounding that away would make the display least useful exactly when you need it most.
And while correcting the figures, we worked through the sequencing carefully so nobody would get hit with a batch of alerts all at once. Fixing something shouldn't be the thing that makes you anxious.
What's next
Some things are still unclear — the status display for eSIMs you've finished using, for one. We'll keep refining that, wording included. As changes land, we'll post them in the development updates.
