The Bloomy app now sends you an automatic notification when your data is running low, when your eSIM's initial setup is complete, and when you've used up your data. "My connection just stopped working abroad and I had no idea" — "Did my setup actually finish?" — these are the small worries that come with using your phone overseas, and timely notifications help you stay ahead of them. In this article, we cover the new notification system, plus a practical guide for what to do after a notification arrives: when to top up versus buy a new eSIM, and simple ways to make your data last longer.
- Three automatic notifications: low data, setup complete, and data used up
- Notifications are available in 7 languages, and each notice is sent only once
- Topping up is the easiest option when your data is running low
- Buying a new eSIM makes more sense when you're changing destinations
- You can also check your remaining data anytime in your account page
What's new
Here's the short version: Bloomy app users now receive an automatic notification at the following three moments. We've also outlined what to do when each one arrives.
| Notification | When it arrives | Suggested next step |
|---|---|---|
| Low data alert | When your remaining data drops to around 25% or less | Consider buying more data while you have Wi-Fi, and hold off on video streaming |
| Setup complete | When your eSIM's initial setup finishes successfully | See the "You're all set" confirmation and simply wait for your departure day |
| Data used up | When you've used all of your data | Follow the notification's link to purchase more data (top-up) |
Notifications are available in 7 languages, including English. Each notice is also sent only once — you won't get the same alert over and over, so notifications stay helpful rather than annoying.
Why we built this
Running out of data abroad is one of those problems you're the last person to notice. The map won't load, your messages on WhatsApp won't send — and only then do you realize your data is gone. When you're traveling, there often isn't someone nearby to ask or a Wi-Fi spot within easy reach, and the longer it takes to notice, the harder it is to recover.
We also heard from many first-time eSIM users that they weren't sure whether their setup had actually finished. Unlike a physical SIM card, there's nothing to insert or remove, so it's hard to "see" that everything went in correctly.
Both of these are worries that shrink dramatically when the right message arrives at the right moment. Rather than making you reach out and wait for an answer, we wanted the information you need to arrive first — that's the idea behind this update.
What this means for you
- Act before your data runs out: Because you're alerted while you still have data left, you can calmly handle it — buy more data over hotel or café Wi-Fi, or dial back video streaming for a while.
- Peace of mind that setup worked: Receiving the "You're all set" notification before departure means one less thing to worry about when you land.
- Know your next step even if you run out: The notification guides you straight to purchasing more data, so you spend less time wondering what to do.
In practice: on a short trip, the low-data alert is a useful cue to adjust how you use data in the second half of your itinerary. On longer stays — studying abroad or working overseas — it helps you keep a feel for your usage across the weeks. And if it's been a while since you last set up an eSIM, the setup-complete notification is reassuring confirmation that you did everything right.
You don't have to wait for a notification, either — you can check your remaining data anytime in your account page. If you're starting to wonder how much you have left, it's worth a quick look even before an alert arrives.
App notifications will only appear if notifications are enabled for the Bloomy app on your phone. Before you travel, take a moment to check your device settings and make sure Bloomy's notifications are turned on.
The Bloomy approach
Notifications are useful — until there are too many of them. So we set two ground rules: only at moments that truly matter, and never the same notice twice. The wording is designed to point you to your next step, not to alarm you. And you won't find promotional sale notifications mixed in.
When you're abroad, you're already making lots of decisions in an unfamiliar environment. Notifications should exist to help you move on to your next step with confidence — not to startle you. That thinking shaped both which notifications we send and how they're worded.
Running low on data? Top-up vs. buying a new eSIM
Once you notice your data is running low, you have two main options: adding data to your current eSIM (a top-up) or purchasing a new eSIM. The rule of thumb: if you're staying in the same country on the same plan, top up; if you want to change something, buy new.
| Top-up | New purchase | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Staying where you are and simply adding data to your current plan | Moving on to another country, or switching plan type (data amount, validity period, etc.) |
| Setup required | None — keep using your current eSIM as is | Yes — the new eSIM needs to be set up |
| Validity | Follows the terms of your current plan | Starts fresh with the new plan's period |
The big advantage of a top-up is that there's no eSIM swapping or reconfiguration — no redoing setup on the road, and barely any interruption to your connection. On the other hand, if your destination is changing, or you want a different type of plan (a larger data plan or Bloomy Unlimited Max, for example), a new purchase is the better fit. When shopping for a new plan, the eSIM comparison page lets you browse by destination, data amount, and duration. Bloomy setup takes just one tap on the setup link you receive, so even a new purchase is quick to get running (see the setup guide).
Note that top-up availability and terms can vary by plan, and pricing (in USD) is confirmed at the time of purchase. To see whether your current plan supports top-ups, check your account page.
Got the low-data alert? Small tricks to make your data last
Between receiving a low-data alert and buying more, a few simple habits can slow down how fast your data drains. These are all standard phone settings, and they're worth doing before you travel, too.
- Use offline maps: Download maps for your destination before departure or over Wi-Fi, and you'll cut data usage on the move significantly.
- Save video and music for Wi-Fi: Lower streaming quality settings, or download what you want to watch and listen to in advance over Wi-Fi.
- Rein in background data: Set app updates and photo cloud syncing to "Wi-Fi only" to stop data from quietly disappearing.
- Turn off video autoplay on social media: Just scrolling your feed can burn a surprising amount of data when videos play automatically.
Combine these habits with the low-data alerts, and "I used it all up without realizing" becomes much easier to avoid. If your connection isn't working properly, our troubleshooting page walks through what to check.
What's next
We plan to fine-tune the types and timing of notifications gradually, based on how they're actually used. Options like choosing which notifications you receive are also on our list to explore (details and timing may change). This release isn't the finish line — we'll keep refining notifications as we learn what works best.

This article reflects information as of July 2026, and notification specifications may change. Bloomy eSIMs are data-only — they do not include a phone number, SMS, or voice calling. Plans are subject to a fair usage policy, and actual connection quality and speeds vary depending on the local network, your device, and your location.
