Running Low? We’ll Now Email You Automatically When Your Data Drops Below 1GB

When the remaining data on your active eSIM drops below 1GB, Bloomy now sends an automatic alert to your registered email address. There's nothing to set up — it's applied automatically for everyone using an eligible eSIM. Running out of data without realizing it, then suddenly finding you can't open your maps or translation app while traveling abroad — this update helps you avoid that moment entirely, giving you time to calmly top up or line up your next plan before your data runs out.

What this article covers
  • An automatic email alert when your remaining data drops below 1GB
  • No setup required — applied automatically to eligible eSIMs
  • You'll receive the alert once per eSIM, and only once
  • Unlimited plans and plans of 1GB or less aren't included
  • What to do next: top up or purchase a new plan

What's new in this update

When the remaining data on your active eSIM drops below 1GB, we'll automatically send an alert to your registered email address. Here are the three key points of how it works:

  • You'll receive the alert only once per eSIM. You won't get repeated low-data reminders.
  • It applies to fixed-data plans. Unlimited plans work differently when it comes to remaining data, so they're not included.
  • Small plans with a total of 1GB or less are also excluded. This avoids the odd experience of getting a "running low" alert right after you purchase.

In addition, on supported smartphones you can now opt in to push notifications from the settings screen in your account page. Availability depends on your device and environment, but on supported devices you can receive the low-data alert as a push notification alongside the email.

Why we made this change

In short: instead of you having to go check your data balance, Bloomy now reaches out to you before you run out.

You've always been able to check your remaining data anytime on your account page. But that only works if you remember to look. When you're busy sightseeing or on the move, data balance is the last thing on your mind — and by the time you think of it, there may be almost nothing left.

When your data suddenly runs out abroad, you lose maps, translation, and the ability to look up restaurants or transit connections all at once. In a familiar place you might manage, but in a country you're visiting for the first time, you could lose your only way of figuring out where you are and where to go next. We see this "ran out without noticing" moment as one of the biggest sources of stress when using your phone abroad, so we built a system that alerts you automatically before it happens.

How this helps you

The biggest change is when you find out you're low on data — before you run out, instead of after. Here's where it makes a difference:

  • No scrambling in the second half of your trip: Because the alert arrives while you still have data left, you're far less likely to find yourself suddenly disconnected and figuring out what to do next.
  • Time to choose your next move calmly: When the alert arrives, you can look at how many days you have left and how you've been using data, then decide at your own pace whether to add data, use up what's left, or switch to a new plan.
  • Fewer balance checks: You no longer need to keep opening your account page to see whether you're "getting close" — you can focus on your trip or your stay instead.
  • Easier pacing for study abroad and long stays: The 1GB alert is a natural prompt to review how quickly you're using data, which helps you choose the right size for your next plan.

When the alert arrives: top up or buy a new plan?

Once the alert arrives, you have two main options: add data to your current eSIM (a top-up) or purchase a new plan. If you're unsure, base your decision on how many days you have left and whether your usage has changed.

When a top-up (adding data) makes sense

A top-up adds data directly to the eSIM you're already using. There's no new eSIM to install — everything keeps working exactly as it is. It's a good fit when you only have a few days left and just need a little more data at your current pace. For plans that support top-ups, you can add data from the relevant eSIM's screen on your account page (availability varies by plan).

When a new plan makes sense

If you still have a long stretch of your stay ahead, your usage has changed from what you originally expected (say, you've started watching a lot more video), or you're moving on to another country, it's often easier to reassess the data size and purchase a new plan. If heavy usage looks likely to continue, switching to an unlimited plan is also an option (unlimited plans may come with usage terms such as a fair use policy, so we recommend reviewing the conditions before you buy).

Setting up a Bloomy eSIM takes just one tap on the setup link we send you. Switching isn't a big lift, so there's no need to keep topping up your current plan just because reinstalling sounds like a hassle. You can find a new plan by destination, data size, and duration on the comparison page (the plans, prices, and terms actually available may vary by country and region, so please check the latest listings on the comparison page before purchasing).

Tip

If you're unsure, let your remaining days decide. Just a few days left? Add a little to your current plan. Still a long way to go? Reassess the whole plan based on how you've actually been using it.

Two things worth knowing: data-only eSIMs and network quality

To get the most out of this alert, there are two things worth keeping in mind.

First, Bloomy eSIMs are data-only. If you use up your data, you'll lose not just maps and web browsing but also app-based calls that run on data — WhatsApp, Messenger, FaceTime, and the like. The flip side: as long as you have data remaining, those app calls work normally. Because the eSIM is data-only, the only things it never supports are calls to and from a phone number (voice calls) and SMS. If you need phone-number or SMS verification, it's a good idea to have another option ready as well.

Second, speed and connectivity depend on the local network, your area, and congestion. Even with plenty of data remaining, speeds can vary by location and time of day. Thinking of "remaining data" and "signal conditions" as two separate things makes it much easier to pinpoint the cause if you run into trouble on the ground. For step-by-step checks when you can't connect, see our connection troubleshooting page.

The details we sweated over

  • One alert, and only one: Repeated low-data reminders become a stress of their own. We designed this around a simple feeling — "a heads-up is welcome; nagging is not" — so you'll get exactly one alert per eSIM.
  • No fear-based messaging: The alert calmly states the fact — your data is running low — and walks you through what you can do next. It doesn't rush you or push you toward another purchase.
  • Consideration for small plans: We tuned which plans are eligible so that small-capacity plans don't trigger a "1GB remaining" alert right after purchase.

What's next

We plan to keep refining what the alert says and how it's delivered, based on how people actually use it. If there's another moment where you'd want a heads-up, or a way you'd prefer to receive it, let us know via our contact page — your feedback shapes what we improve next.
