eSIM Not Connecting? How to Fix It Abroad (iPhone & Android)

When your eSIM won't connect after you land, the fix is usually one of three things: activating the line, turning on data roaming, or selecting the right line (plan). An actual hardware fault is rare. Don't panic—start by toggling Airplane Mode on and off and restarting your phone. If that doesn't help, work through the checklist below from the top. We'll walk you through where to look on both iPhone and Android, step by step.

This guide brings together the most common eSIM issues and how to resolve them. Reading it once before you leave makes it much easier to stay calm if something goes wrong on the road. If you're stuck without signal right now, take a look at our troubleshooting page as well.

What Is an eSIM? The Basics First

An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone that you load with your plan details online—no physical card to swap in or out. You activate it by scanning a QR code or tapping through an app. With a travel eSIM, the usual flow is to load your destination's data plan ahead of time, then switch it on once you arrive.

In other words, an eSIM works in two stages: writing the data to your phone and activating the line. When it won't connect, the snag is almost always at one of these two points.

Try These 3 Steps First

Before digging into detailed settings, try these three things. They often fix the problem on their own.

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then off again (this prompts your phone to reconnect to the network)
  2. Restart your phone (helpful when a setting hasn't taken effect properly)
  3. Move to a spot with better signal (basements, airport interiors, and deep inside buildings can have weak coverage)

Right after you arrive, it can take a few minutes to connect to a local network. Waiting a little and checking again is sometimes all it takes.

Narrowing Down Why It Won't Connect

Most issues fall into one of four categories. Start with whichever matches your situation to find the fix faster.

SymptomCommon causeWhere to check
No signal / no bars at allThe line isn't activated yet, or the plan hasn't startedWhen the plan activates
Bars show, but no internetData roaming is off, or the wrong line is selectedMobile/cellular data settings
Only certain apps can't connectLow Data Mode or an app-level restrictionApp and device settings
Suddenly slow or stoppedData allowance reached, congestion, or speed managementRemaining data (your account)

If you have bars but no internet, it's almost always a settings fix. Follow the iPhone or Android steps below. If you're unsure about the setup itself, it can help to review the activation flow from the start on our eSIM setup guide.

What to Check on iPhone

On iPhone, work through the Settings app in order.

  1. Open Cellular (or Mobile Data)
  2. Select your travel eSIM line and confirm "Turn On This Line" is enabled
  3. On the same screen, turn Data Roaming on (travel eSIMs generally require this)
  4. Under Cellular Data, confirm your travel eSIM is selected as the line in use (not your usual home SIM)
  5. If needed, review the automatic line selection under "Voice & Data"

If you're running your travel eSIM alongside your usual home SIM, leaving data set to the home line means you won't get online at your destination. Choosing the wrong line here is one of the most common reasons people can't connect.

What to Check on Android

Menu names vary a little by model on Android, but the flow is the same.

  1. Open Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (Mobile Network)
  2. Select your travel eSIM and confirm the SIM is enabled (on)
  3. Turn Roaming on
  4. Turn Mobile Data on and confirm the travel eSIM is the SIM used for data
  5. If you still can't connect, check the APN settings (enter them as your plan instructions describe—most are configured automatically)

The APN is the gateway setting for your connection. Some plans require entering it manually, so check the instructions you received at purchase as well.

Still Not Working? Run Through This Checklist

If the settings look right but nothing improves, check these in order.

  • Has the start date arrived? Plans that activate on a set date may show no signal until that day.
  • Device compatibility and SIM lock. A phone that doesn't support eSIM or is SIM-locked won't work. You can verify on our compatible devices page.
  • Remaining data. Once your data is used up, the connection stops. Check your balance in your account.
  • Did you delete the eSIM by mistake? If it's removed, you may need to reinstall it.
  • Is your destination covered? Confirm the plan's supported countries and regions.

If you've tried all of this and it's still not resolved, rather than deleting and re-setting things up over and over on your own, it's quicker to describe your situation through our contact page.

Good to Know About eSIMs

These Are Data-Only Plans

Bloomy plans are data-only. That means even when you're connected, they aren't designed for phone calls or SMS tied to a phone number—there's no phone number, no SMS, and no voice calling. If you need SMS verification codes or voice calls, consider keeping your existing number active or pairing this with a service that includes a number. That said, calls and messages through apps like WhatsApp can often work wherever you have a working data connection.

About Speeds on Unlimited Plans

Even on unlimited-type plans, a fair use policy may adjust speeds after a certain amount of usage, and tethering conditions may apply. If things feel "suddenly slower," it's usually not a fault—it can come down to these conditions or local network congestion. Real-world performance also varies with the local network, your device, and the area you're in. Because the terms differ by plan and over time, please check the latest details before you buy. For more on unlimited options, see our unlimited plan page.

Prepare Ahead to Worry Less

Most issues can be avoided with a little prep before you go. These steps help you travel with peace of mind.

  • Install your eSIM while you still have Wi-Fi, before you travel (this avoids failed installs at your destination)
  • Check how activation works for your plan (do you switch the line on after arrival, or does it start on a set date?)
  • Confirm your phone supports eSIM before you leave, on our compatible devices page
  • Read through the steps once on our setup guide

If you're still choosing a plan for your destination, you can search by country, data amount, and number of days on our eSIM comparison page. If you're unsure how much data you'll need, picking a plan with a little extra room helps you avoid scrambling if you run low while traveling.
