How to Set Up an eSIM for Overseas Travel (iPhone & Android): From Purchase to Activation

An eSIM is a SIM built right into your smartphone, with your data plan written to it digitally. There's no physical card to swap in and out — you set everything up by scanning a QR code or entering the details by hand. Setting up an eSIM for travel can sound complicated, but it really comes down to three steps: “① buy a plan → ② install it on your device before you leave → ③ turn the line on once you arrive.” For most plans, it's easiest to install before departure and then switch the line on after you land, so you can start using it with peace of mind. In this guide, we'll walk through the setup on both iPhone and Android, and point out the spots where people most often get stuck.

Before you begin, check that your device actually supports eSIM. You can look up your model on our eSIM-compatible devices page.

The Big Picture: From Purchase to Activation

Setting up a travel eSIM breaks down into three main steps. Getting a feel for the whole flow first makes the rest much easier to follow.

StepWhenWhat you do
① PurchaseBefore you travelChoose a plan that fits your destination, data amount, and number of days, then buy it. You'll receive a QR code or setup details.
② InstallBefore you travel (on Wi-Fi)Scan the QR code to add the eSIM to your device.
③ ActivateAfter you arrive, in most casesTurn the line on, enable data roaming, and start connecting.

We recommend handling the install (②) before you leave, while you still have Wi-Fi. The right moment to activate (③) can vary from plan to plan, so check the instructions you received at purchase.

What to Prepare Before You Start

For a smooth setup, run through these checks before your trip.

Is your device eSIM-compatible?

Not every phone supports eSIM. It's worth checking your device ahead of time so there are no surprises.

Is your device unlocked?

Phones bought from a carrier are sometimes locked to that network. As a rule, your device needs to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM.

Do you have stable Wi-Fi?

Installing an eSIM requires an internet connection. Get the setup done somewhere with reliable Wi-Fi, such as at home, before you head out.

Setting Up an eSIM on iPhone

On iPhone, setup is usually done with a QR code. Here's the general flow — wording may differ slightly depending on your iOS version.

  1. Open SettingsCellular (or Mobile Data).
  2. Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
  3. Scan the QR code you received with the camera. (If a manual-entry option is offered, you can use that instead.)
  4. Give the new line an easy-to-recognize label (for example, “Travel”).
  5. After you arrive, turn the new line on and enable Data Roaming.

Keep your everyday line (your primary line) as it is, and switch your mobile data over to the eSIM line — that's how you'll stay connected while abroad.

Setting Up an eSIM on Android

Menu names vary by model and manufacturer on Android, but the basic flow is the same.

  1. Open SettingsNetwork & internetSIMs (or Mobile network).
  2. Tap Add SIM or the + icon, then choose Download an eSIM.
  3. Scan the QR code and follow the on-screen prompts to register it.
  4. Turn the new eSIM on.
  5. After you arrive, enable Data Roaming to start connecting.

If you can't find the right menu, try typing “eSIM” or “SIM” into the search box within Settings to jump straight to it. You'll also find more detailed steps in our setup guide.

Common Pitfalls and Things to Watch For

When to activate

With some plans, the validity period starts counting from the moment you activate. Activate too far ahead of your trip and you could lose days of usable time at your destination. Check the instructions provided at purchase for when to install versus when to activate.

Turning on data roaming

To get online with a travel eSIM, you'll usually need to switch Data Roaming on. If it's left off, you won't connect — this is one of the most common things people overlook.

It's data-only

Like many travel eSIMs, Bloomy plans are data-only. They don't include a phone number, and they don't support voice calls or SMS (text messaging). If you need a phone number or SMS-based verification, look into other options as well, such as a local SIM or a plan that includes a number. That said, app-based calls through services like WhatsApp can often work wherever you have a data connection.

QR codes usually can't be scanned twice

An eSIM QR code generally can't be reused once it's been set up. If you accidentally delete the profile, you may not be able to set it up again, so delete with care.

A Note on Setting Up “Unlimited” Plans

The setup steps for unlimited-type plans are the same, but keep in mind that “unlimited” doesn't necessarily mean entirely without limits. Some plans have a fair-use policy, or may slow speeds after a certain amount of data is used. Whether tethering (sharing with other devices) is allowed can also differ by plan. It's a good idea to review the latest terms before you buy.

What to Do If You're Not Connecting

If you can't get online after setup, work through these checks one by one.

  • Is the eSIM line you added switched on?
  • Is Data Roaming enabled?
  • Is your mobile data set to use the eSIM line?
  • Is Airplane Mode off? Try toggling it on and off to reconnect.
  • Have you tried restarting your device?
  • Does the start date / activation timing line up correctly?
